Asparagus
When To Plant: Plant in early spring, around the time the daffodils are in bloom. If plants arrive before weather conditions permit planting, keep them in a cool dry place.
Soil: Asparagus likes dry feet, soil must drain well. Soil should be rich in organic matter, work in compost and fertilizer when preparing to plant. PH should be 6.5-7.5, slightly acid to alkaline.
Planting: Dig a trench 4-6” deep, space plants 18-24” in rows that are 5 ft. apart. Fan the roots in all directions. When planting crowns should be completely covered with ¼” to ½” of soil. Water as necessary throughout the first season.
Care Of Plants: Apply compost and rotted manure regularly through the growing season. Weeds will compete with the newly started plants, use a straw mulch during the summer for prevention.
First Year: Do not harvest any spears the first year. In the fall, cut off the dead fern like foliage and apply a two inch of compost. Top this with a six inch layer of straw for winter protection.
Second Year: After danger of frost, remove mulch to let new growth emerge. Harvest sparingly, only the thickest spears for one to two weeks. Again, follow instructions above for winter protection.
Third Year: Harvest should last several weeks, break off spears at ground level that are the thickness of your finger and around 6-8” long. Do not harvest thin spears. Ends of spears should be closed tightly, this may require daily harvesting for a season.
Continue fertilizing during the growing season, mulching for winter protection, and removing mulch in spring for growth on an annual basis.
