Bare-root plants such as blackberries, blueberries, currants, elderberries, gooseberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, and asparagus can be planted in early spring (late March to early April), as soon as the soil is thawed, workable, and not too wet. Because these plants are dormant, they tolerate freezing temperatures, making it safe to plant several weeks before your last frost date. Early planting takes advantage of natural spring moisture and encourages strong root establishment.
Tip: Avoid planting in cold, waterlogged soils—especially for blueberries and asparagus, which prefer well-drained conditions.
